ON TUESDAY, VOTE FOR EQUALITY
Written by Miss Bliss on November 3, 2008 – 4:19 pm -“Hello, I’m a volunteer for Vote No on Prop 8,” I say when a woman answers the phone. “We are calling undecided voters to encourage them to support equal rights by voting no on Prop 8. Do you believe that same-sex couples deserve the same rights as heterosexual couples?”
“Well,” the woman says, “I think gay people are going to hell, but I also think they’re allowed to do what they want to do.”
“So… you are going to vote no on Prop. 8 and support equal rights for same sex couples?”
“Sure, I’ll vote no, but they are still going to hell.”
“Well, thank you so much for your time. Remember to vote.”
I hang up the phone and turn to the room of men sitting at tables all around me. I ring the bell in the center of the table signifying I contacted an undecided voter who has pledged to vote no on California’s Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. I tell them not to get too excited; she still thinks all queers are going straight to hell.
“If the haters are all going to heaven,” I say, “please send me to hell. I want to spend eternity with the interesting and fun people.”
The boys laugh and turning back to the phone list, I dial a new number. We volunteers are happy that most of the callers are polite, even when they say they are supporting the proposition or explaining that all same-sex couples are sinners. This is the first time I have volunteered for phone banking and it feels good to support a cause I truly believe in.
On Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, voters in Arizona, California and Florida will decide whether their state constitutions will be changed, denying equal rights for same-sex couples. If you live in Arizona, congratulate yourself for defeating the anti-gay marriage amendment in 2006. Unfortunately, the battle continues as they brought the proposition back this year. Please tell your Arizonan friends and family to vote no on Prop 102, AGAIN. In California, please tell anyone you have ever met to vote no on Prop. 8. And if you are in Florida, please make sure to vote against Amendment 2 and tell your friends and family to do the same.
Bisexuals are encouraged to support our LGBT brothers and sisters by voting against discriminatory constitutional amendments. If you are not registered to vote in one of these states, please e-mail or call your friends and family who do and encourage them to support equal rights for all Americans.
And don’t forget to vote on Tuesday!
And if you see a pretty girl with an “I voted” sticker on her lapel, make sure to blow her a kiss.
What’s foxier than voting?
XOXOXOXOXO
