I was never taken seriously about my sexuality. To my mother, my "antics" were seen as my trying to be " different" and also seen as my being bored. I have been always outraged by the "bored" part. I am so glad to hear that mothers are proud of their daughters no matter how they choose to live their lives. It is never easy telling a trusted loved one what your preference is....because we hold their opinions in such high regard. to know I will never be taken seriously hurts because I wish I could go and tell my mom stories and everyday things that maybe happen, but she will never get it. It is funny I don't think my father has any clue that I am bi sexual. While I am probably like a 9 to 9.5 on the gay side of that spectrum, when I came out to my Mom over 18 yrs ago, she was nothing but loving and supportive. Even confessed that she had experimented a bit in her early 20's. She only ever dated one girl and pretty much knew it was a phase but something, none-the-less she wanted to experience. Being straight, bi or gay doesn't define you as a person, but is more so an aspect of who you are. And truly loving someone is being completely accepting of who they are.
